UGC NET Notification December 2025!

University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test is administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the UGC. This examination assesses the eligibility of Indian candidates for positions as Assistant Professors and for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in universities and colleges across India. The test is conducted biannually in June and December covering 85 subjects with Ayurveda Biology being introduced as a new subject in 2025. The format of the exam is a Computer-Based Test (CBT). The examination is anticipated to take place over several days in December 2025 or early January 2026.

Eligibility Criteria:

A Master’s degree or its equivalent from a university recognized by the UGC is required, with a minimum aggregate score of 55% (or 50% for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD categories). Additionally, students in their final year of postgraduate studies are also eligible to apply.

Age Limit:

For JRF: Not more than 30 years as of the first day of the month in which the exam is held (e.g., December 1, 2025). 5-year relaxation for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD/women/transgender candidates, and additional relaxations for those with research experience or armed forces service.

For Assistant Professor: No upper age limit.

PhD Entrance Exemption: Many universities (e.g., Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University) exempt JRF holders from their PhD entrance tests, directly admitting them to interviews or selection processes. Non-JRF NET qualifiers may still need to appear for entrance tests, depending on the university.

Nationality: Indian nationals only. Reservation policy as per Government of India rules applies.

Stipend:

JRF awardees receive a monthly fellowship of ₹31,000 for the first two years (Junior Research Fellow) and ₹35,000 for the next three years (Senior Research Fellow, subject to progress). House Rent Allowance (HRA) (8–24% of stipend, depending on the city) and contingency grants (₹10,000–₹20,000 annually) for research expenses like books, journals, or travel.

Funding Beyond JRF:

If you don’t qualify for JRF but clear NET, explore other PhD funding options:

University Fellowships: Many institutes offer institutional fellowships (e.g., DU’s Non-NET Fellowship: ₹8,000/month).

ICSSR Doctoral Fellowship: For social sciences, offered by the Indian Council of Social Science Research.

CSIR Fellowship: For science-related PhDs, if you qualify through CSIR-UGC NET.

INSPIRE Fellowship: For science students, offered by DST (Department of Science and Technology).

Project-Based Funding: Join funded research projects under professors, often advertised on university websites.

  2. Click on “New Registration” for UGC NET December 2025 and fill in basic details (name, email, mobile) to generate Application Number and Password.
  3. Log in and complete the form: Enter personal, academic details, select up to two subjects (cannot be changed later), and choose exam centers (up to four preferences).
  4. Upload scanned documents: Photograph, signature, and category certificate (if applicable).
  5. Pay the fee online (debit/credit card/net banking/UPI) and submit.
  6. Download and print the confirmation page.

Exam Pattern:

The exam consists of two papers (no break between them), to be completed in 3 hours (180 minutes). Both are objective-type with Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). There is no negative marking.
